HOW TO CHOOSE A PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME

Choosing the right paint color for your home can be an overwhelming task. But with a little planning and creativity, you can choose a color that perfectly fits your style and personality. Here are some tips to help you with your selections.

What is the Style and Purpose of the Room?

Before choosing a paint color, it’s important to determine the style of the space you are going to paint. Are you looking for traditional, modern, or eclectic design? Warm or cool colors? The purpose of the room you are painting can also affect the color you choose. A calming blue might be ideal for a bedroom, while a bright yellow may be more appropriate for a cheerful kitchen or dining room.

Some of us love beautiful pops of color on our walls while others prefer something more neutral. Going with a neutral color on your walls can help your furniture stick out and will make it easier to switch out decor. Think about the decor going into the space and use it to draw inspiration from. It is way easier to match a paint color with your furniture than it is to match furniture to a paint color.

Think About Lighting

Lighting can significantly affect how a color looks in a room. Consider the amount of natural light the room receives and the type of artificial lighting you’ll be using. Test paint samples in the room at different times of the day to see how the color looks in different lighting conditions.

Lighting can also affect what kind of paint finish you might want to use. A paint’s finish refers to the amount of light that is reflected from the paint’s surface. For example, matte paint has a surface that absorbs most light, giving it a chalk-like appearance. On the contrary, high-gloss paint reflects the most light and has a very shiny appearance. Going with a paint finish that reflects more light can make the room feel brighter, while a finish that reflects less light will look smoother and make the room cozier.

Test Paint Samples

That all being said, always test paint samples before making a final decision. Purchase the largest samples of your top color choices available at your store or sample cans and apply them directly to the walls in a huge square at eye level. For larger rooms, apply them to multiple walls. Observe the color during different times of the day and in different lighting conditions to get a better idea of how it will look. Look at them next to your couch, next to your rug, and any wall decor you plan to hang.

Consider the Color Flow

When choosing paint colors for multiple rooms, consider how they will flow together throughout your home. You may want to create a cohesive color palette for your whole home. It is a good rule of thumb to stand in one room and pay attention to all of the adjacent rooms that you can see. Make sure all of the visible rooms are colors that coordinate. Bedrooms can be different since they are typically hidden behind a wall. This method works really well for open floor plans. Choosing colors that are the same temperature can create a nice flow, and choosing accent colors that appear in all of the rooms can tie everything together nicely.
